Project
117 Heretaunga Street East
Seismic strengthening of the existing building complex for repurposing
Brief
117 Heretaunga Street East is one of three buildings on Hastings’ main street being repurposed under the H Central programme. Each was built in a different era to a different code, so each needed its own seismic assessment and a strengthening scheme tuned to the structure on hand.
Approach
EQSE staged the structural design to match the staged construction programme on site, allowing fit-out and trade work to begin in completed zones while later stages were still being detailed. Existing elements that were sound and capable of carrying the new demand were retained; new strengthening was added where the assessment showed gaps.
Outcome
Construction is nearing completion for this part of the H Central precinct. Retaining as much of the existing fabric as possible kept the streetscape character intact and reduced the embodied-carbon footprint of the upgrade.
