Composting Facility

Brief

EQSE worked with Blair Judd of Judds Ltd on a new biosolid waste processing facility in Gisborne. The brief was a large-span industrial building that could survive its own internal environment for decades — high humidity, ammonia exposure, and the corrosive byproducts of the composting process itself.

Approach

The structural design had to balance long internal spans (to support the operational layout) against an environment that punishes mild-steel fasteners and thin sections. Material selection and detailing for durability drove a number of the structural decisions.

Outcome

Completed in 2023. The facility is in active service and represents a significant step forward for biosolid processing on the East Coast. Read more in Waterford Press.
